Michael sorting the Thermafleece
A local student, Michael Kenyon worked for one week in July with Second Nature as part of his work experience. One of Michael's projects whilst he was with us, was to measure up his parents loft, work out a quote and then install Thermafleece. Here's Michael's week's experience as he describes it.
I am Michael Kenyon, I’m 17 and currently studying at the lower sixth form at UCC in Penrith. I came to Second Nature on work experience, because I’m interested in the environment and wanted to work with a company that helps the environment.
During my week of work experience at Second Nature I’ve learnt a lot of new things and skills. I have seen how the company works, both in the office and I’ve had an insight into how Thermafleece starts as wool on a sheep and goes through the various stages to end-up as insulation. As part of my experience I insulated my own loft.

Project Location:
30 Wordsworth St
Penrith
House Information:
A Semi-detached 19th Century house.
Installation:
First layer of insulation
The area that was insulated was 22m2 at a depth of 200mm thick (2 sets of 100mm the first layer went between the rafters and the second layer was cross layed in the opposite direction).
The reason for insulating was to stop heat being lost, therefore saving money on energy bills and having a warmer house. The house had a very small amount of poor quality insulation, so it needed replacing.
Even through I have never layed insulation before the Thermafleece was very easy to lay, due to it being very malleable it fits into every space. When there where small spaces that needed filling the Thermafleece was easy to cut or even tear with my hands to the right size and shape.
