Edinburgh Castle Palace Block

Edinburgh Castle Palace BlockEdinburgh Castle Palace Block

Project Location:

Historic Scotland, Palace Block, The Castle, Edinburgh

Project Manager:

Historic Scotland

The Building:

The Palace Block is situated at the heart of Edinburgh Castle and now houses on the upper floor Historic Scotland’s own staff.

Installation:

Retro fit of insulation to previously uninsulated loft area, insulation to be of a type that would be sympathetic to the fabric of the National monument.
Total Loft area size 361m2. Fitted one layer of 100mm thick Thermafleece.

Fitting constraints – fitting around services in loft areas. Irregular joist spacing in loft area cutting to ensure tight fitting is achieved and maintained through the loft area.

Delivery Constraints:

It was vital that there would be no disruption to the day to day running of the Castle, therefore deliveries would have to be scheduled for early morning and because of access restrictions within the Castle there was a need for mechanical off load facilities, Clyde Insulation Supplies were more than pleased to work with Historic Scotland to ensure minimum disruption.

Distributor:

Clyde Insulation Supplies, Stirling

Background:

Concern about the heating bills was the primary concern that prompted the need for insulating the loft space. The area to be insulated is directly below what is now used as offices and staff areas within the Palace Block.

The loft insulation would have to work sympathetically with the ancient structure. It would need to provide good thermal value for the limited space available in the loft area.

Unlike most modern buildings where services are generally hidden behind walls, most services in the palace block run through the loft area. Access to these services has to be maintained in a safe and practical manner. A non-irritant material was required to ensure the comfort of maintenance staff working in the loft area.

Installation criteria:

  1. Insulation to be sympathetic to the structure.
  2. Must provide a good insulation value in the limited space available
  3. Non-irritant material making access easier and safer.

Thermafleece's ability to fulfil these 3 design criteria made it the ideal choice for the project.
